Is Andrew Garfield Gay? Truth About His S*xual Identity!

In a word, Andrew Garfield’s sexuality is hard to figure out. In the past, the actor has played many LGBTQ roles, such as a transgender woman in the music video for Arcade Fire’s “We Exist” and Prior Walter in the play Angels in America, which was set during the AIDS crisis.

He has also been a strong supporter of the LGBTQ community. In 2018, he gave his Tony Award to the LGBTQ community and spoke out about wanting more LGBTQ characters in superhero movies like The Amazing Spider-Man.

But being a straight ally and claiming to be a member of the LGBTQ community are two different things. So, what side does Garfield stand on?

Is Andrew Garfield Gay?

Garfield got into trouble in 2017 when he was promoting the London National Theatre’s production of Tony Kushner’s acclaimed play Angels in America by saying that watching RuPaul’s Drag Race was his “life outside of the play” and that he was “a gay man right now, just without the physical act – that’s all.”

He also said, “As far as I know, I’m not a gay man.” “Maybe I’ll wake up later in life, which I’m sure will be great, and I’ll get to explore that part of the garden. For now, though, I’m happy to be alone in my area, which is also great.”

People in the LGBTQ community reacted quickly. Some said Garfield was oversimplifying what it’s like to be LGBTQ, and others said his statement was another clear example of queerbaiting.

He was also criticized for playing a gay role as a straight (or at least physically straight, according to Garfield) man. This has been a big point of contention for LGBTQ advocates, since LGBTQ actors are often overlooked for both straight and queer roles.

Garfield did clarify his statement later, saying that what he meant to say was that he planned to “dive in as fully as I can” in the role out of deep respect for the community.

Has Andrew Garfield turned out to be s*xually fluid?

Even though Garfield doesn’t think of himself as gay right now, he told OUT magazine in 2018 that he’s open to the idea that his s*xuality could change.

He said, “However, my attitude toward life is that I always try to give in to the mystery of not being in charge.” “I’m willing to follow any urges that come up in me at any time.”

But he later said that if he had to label himself right now, he would call himself straight.

What does Andrew Garfield think of straight actors in LGBTQ roles?

In an interview to promote Lin-Manuel Miranda’s movie version of Tick, Tick… Boom!, an autobiographical musical about the life and tragic death of Rent creator Jonathan Larson, Garfield was asked again what he thought about keeping LGBTQ roles for LGBTQ actors.

In response, Garfield said, “Empathic imagination will die if we only let people be cast exactly as they are.”

“I think they are talking about two different things,” Garfield said. “One is about giving everyone the same chances, and I’m all for that. Because we should want a world where everyone gets a fair shot, no matter who they are, what colour they are, or where they come from.

“The two different conversations must happen at the same time. Because I don’t want to see empathy-based imagination go away. It’s what our culture needs most, and it’s beautiful. Right now, it’s the only thing that can save us,” he said.

Final Lines

At least for now, Andrew Garfield is definitely and probably straight. He might think of himself as s*xually fluid or at least be open to the idea, but right now Garfield is a heteros*xual. But whether or not his view on straight actors playing LGBTQ roles is a problem is a much harder question to answer.
