The Boy and the Heron, a 2023 Japanese animated fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, is produced by Studio Ghibli. The 1937 Genzabur Yoshino novel of the same name, which is referred to in the film by its Japanese title, is unrelated to the storyline of the film. The movie’s US release date may be found here.

On December 8, independent animation distributor GKIDS will release Studio Ghibli’s “The Boy and the Heron,” the farewell film from renowned animator Hayao Miyazaki, in the United States and Canada.

Along with the company’s announcement of the release date, the first teaser trailer for the upcoming film, which centres on a young boy named Mahito whose mother is killed in World War II, was also made public.

Studio Ghibli Pictures shared on Twitter about THE BOY AND THE HERON Trailer:

Mahito is struggling with his melancholy when a mysterious heron tempts him to go through a doorway into another world where life and death find a new beginning.

For the first time, footage from “The Boy and the Heron” has been made available to the general public outside of Japanese theatres in the trailer, which you can see above. Before the film’s July release in Japan, Studio Ghibli did not make any trailers or other promotional materials available.

Despite this, “The Boy and the Heron” has made just about $53 million this year, ranking 93rd on the list of the top 100 highest-grossing movies and becoming one of Japan’s biggest box office triumphs. You can check out Twitter.

The movie will now be screened at numerous prominent film festivals, including those in Toronto, New York, London, and San Sebastian. Despite previously retracting such statements, Miyazaki has declared that “The Boy and the Heron” will be his last film.

The animated film was made by Toshio Suzuki, an 82-year-old animator, as a gift for his grandson. With works like “My Neighbor Totoro” and “Princess Mononoke,” as well as his 2001 film “Spirited Away,” which is still the only non-English animated film to win the Best Picture Oscar, Miyazaki became a well-known personality in the animation industry.
