Once thought of as the best fantasy show on TV, Game of Thrones lost most of the respect it had built up with viewers during its disappointing final season. But HBO’s prequel spin-off House of the Dragon won back a lot of the respect that the first show had lost. Even though it was sometimes boring, the first season of Game of Thrones was a big step up from the last few episodes. It was closer to the good old days than most people thought it would be.
Even though the end of Game of Thrones was kind of a mess, that didn’t mean that people weren’t interested in Dragon at first. On the other hand, the number of people who watched broke all HBO records, with the Dragon premiere being the most-watched show ever on the network.
So, it shouldn’t have been a surprise that a second season was announced soon after the first episode aired. HBO‘s Francesca Orsi said, “We couldn’t be more excited to bring the epic saga of House Targaryen to life with season two.”
But it will be interesting to see what happens at the top when the second season starts.
Miguel Sapochnik, a regular on Game of Thrones and a co-showrunner on Dragon’s first season, will step down for the second block of episodes.
“Working in the Game of Thrones universe over the past few years has been an honour and a privilege,” he said in a statement, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “Of course, I wish [House of the Dragon co-creator Ryan Condal] and his team success and the best for season two and beyond.”
Condal told Variety that they plan to start filming the second season in early 2023. The premiere date is “to be determined.” You might think it’s nearly impossible to make an entire season of Game of Thrones in a single year, but the showrunner did not rule out a drop in the same year.
Here’s what else we know about House of the Dragon Season 2
What Will Happen In House of the Dragon Season 2
So, here you go. Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) did everything she could for a few episodes to avoid a civil war with Alicent (Olivia Cooke), her father’s wife and ex-best friend. However, her son Lucerys’s (Elliot Grihault) death at the hands of Aemond’s dragon Vhagar has forced her hand. Sure, it could have been a mistake, but now it’s too late to turn back, and war will happen because of it.
What else? A lot of people dying and things getting broken. In Paddy Considine’s words, the dragons in the book’s title are like nuclear weapons in a fantasy world. As of now, each side of the war has about the same number of beasts, but even one of each is enough to wipe out whole cities and camps (see the end of Game of Thrones for an example), which means there are a lot of them around. Rhaenyra’s plan seems to be to blockade King’s Landing from the sea with the Velaryon fleet while keeping the upper hand in the skies. This may be easier said than done when the other side can guarantee that both sides will be destroyed.
She will also have to get the support of the Houses Tully, Baratheon, and Stark. Fans of Game of Thrones will recognise the Starks as the family of Eddard, Bran, Arya, and the rest who live in Winterfell. We’ve already been to Storm’s End, where Lucerys was eaten as a result. Does this mean that the action will move beyond the Red Keep, Dragonstone, and Driftmark?
Condal told Variety that the second season of the show needs to get bigger. “I think those will still be where the show is filmed. But a war is coming, and different kingdoms and armies from all over Westeros will have to choose sides. I don’t think we’ll get as big as the original Game of Thrones did in the end,” he said, teasing “new worlds” that weren’t in the first Thrones. “Don’t worry, there’s a lot more to come.”
Who Will Be In The Cast Of House Of Dragon Season 2?
It’s a good question. The answer right now is that we just don’t know. There will be a lot of deaths before the end of season one, and we think King Viserys, played by Paddy Considine, will be one of them (for obvious reasons), so it’s not clear who will be around for season two.
Rhaenyra, played by Emma D’Arcy, and Alicent Hightower, played by Olivia Cooke, look like they will be back for season two. But in reality, we don’t know.
There were a few rumours going around on Twitter that Elizabeth Olsen and Henry Cavill would show up in the show. However, in an interview with Variety in October, Elizabeth Olsen shot those rumours down. “No, I haven’t heard about that! But I know what’s going on in House of the Dragon. How strange. How come? Why me? I have no idea how strange that is. I also don’t know that guy!”
Variety says that Cregan Stark, the leader of Winterfell, plays a “pretty big role” in the civil war at the centre of House of the Dragon going forward.
Condal, who runs the Dragon show, wouldn’t say who they were looking at, but he did say that they’ll find someone to replace Cregan “at some point,” which suggests that we’ll be going to the North soon.
House Of Dragon Season 2 Release Date: When Will It Come Out?
So far, nothing is set in stone. A Spanish newspaper said that the HBO show would return to Cáceres, the city that stood in for King’s Landing in the first season, to film in early 2023.
In an interview with Variety, showrunner Ryan Condal said that filming for the series will begin in early 2023. You might think that means the House of dragon season 2 will come out sometime in 2024, but that’s just a guess. Condal didn’t rule out a 2023 release, even though it seems unlikely.
