Caitlyn Jenner, born William Bruce Jenner on October 28, 1949, in Mount Kisco, New York, U.S., is an American decathlete who made history in 1976 by setting a new world record of 8,618 points to win gold in the Olympic Games in Montreal. She came out as transgender in 2015.
At Newton (Connecticut) High School, Bruce Jenner began his athletic career, where he earned varsity letters in gridiron football, basketball, and athletics and also took up waterskiing on his own, eventually becoming East Coast all-over champion in 1966, 1969, and 1971. In 1969, Jenner attended Graceland College (Lamoni, Iowa) on a football scholarship; however, a knee ailment limited his participation to basketball and track. In 1971, Jenner became the first American to compete in the decathlon. Two years later, at the Olympic Games in Munich, West Germany, he placed 10th. Early career
On day two of the men’s decathlon at the 1972 U.S. Olympic Trials at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, Jenner moved up from tenth to fifth, behind Steve Gough and Andrew Pettes. Despite starting the 1500-meter race 19 seconds behind teammate Gough, Jenner crossed the finish line 22 seconds ahead of the competition and earned a spot on the Olympic squad. Because of this, the Eugene Register-Guard published the question, “Who’s Jenner? After qualifying, Jenner placed tenth in the decathlon at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany. After seeing the Soviet athlete Mykola Avilov win, Jenner was motivated to begin a rigorous training schedule. At twelve o’clock in the morning, I began my preparation for the Olympics by jogging around the streets of Munich, Germany.
