On Wednesday, September 21, NBC will air the premiere of Season 10 of the ABC sitcom The Goldbergs, which will feature the ultimate fate of Jeff Garlin’s character.
In the first episode of Season 10, viewers will learn that Murray, played by Garlin, has been dead for quite some time, explaining why he has been absent from family life since the middle of Season 9. The new season will pick up a few months after his death, by which time the Goldbergs will have mostly moved on.
What Pressured Jeff Garlin To Leave The Goldbergs?
Jeff Garlin’s departure from The Goldbergs is due to an HR investigation into his behavior on set. In an interview with Vanity Fair days before his official departure from the show was announced on December 16, 2021, Garlin dismissed multiple allegations of misconduct on set as “nonsense.“
Garlin stated in an interview with Vanity Fair: “In my opinion, I have a process for how I am humorous about the scene and my responsibilities. They believe it creates a quote “unsafe” workplace. Now, mind you, my foolishness resulting in an unsafe workplace is something I do not comprehend.
He proceeded, “I am always a considerate and considerate person. I make mistakes sure. My comedy, however, is about easing people’s suffering. Why would I ever want to cause someone pain for amusement? This constitutes bullying. This is simply uncalled for.”
According to reports, his departure was “mutually agreed upon” by himself and Sony Pictures Television. Barnow disclosed, “This will be a family that has not reconciled the death of their father but has moved on and dealt with a great deal of that.
“Therefore, we are optimistic about the impending birth of a child and optimistic about the future. This presents an opportunity for this intriguing emotional basis for people’s behavior.”Bishop remarked: “It truly feels like a major reset for us. Consequently, we have a tremendous amount of momentum heading into this new season.”

After nine years on ABC, Season 10 will mark the first time Garlin has not appeared in an episode of The Goldbergs. Erica (played by Hayley Orrantia) and Geoff (Sam Lerner) will be having their first child, The Goldbergs showrunners Alex Barnow and Chris Bishop teased to Entertainment Weekly.
Before Departing, Jeff Garlin Addressed The Matter During A Stand-Up Comedy Routine
According to Variety, in the days leading up to Jeff Garlin’s departure from The Goldbergs’s comedian performed in front of a packed house at Hollywood Improv, where he reportedly discussed the ABC sitcom and his decision to leave the series after nearly a decade. Garlin’s show, which occurred on the same day as the Vanity Fair interview was phone-free but a reporter in attendance reported that Garlin repeatedly told the audience how much he despised the show and that he didn’t want to discuss it, yet he continued to do so.
The Variety article continued by stating that Garlin claimed he was in trouble with ABC for comments he made on the set of The Goldbergs that he was fed up with. According to the reporter, the routine was predominately about The Goldbergs controversy and related issues. Again, no photos or videos were taken that night because cell phones were not permitted inside.
The Goldbergs Was Renewed For The Tenth Season
Deadline reports that just as it seemed like The Goldbergs would be canceled in 2022 along with other shows over the Jeff Garlin controversy, ABC decided to renew the comedy for a 10th season to air sometime that fall.

There has been no confirmation that The Goldbergs will return for a second season beyond the one set to premiere on September 21, 2022, however, it is not out of the question that the show will be renewed. There has been a spate of shows losing their leading actors in recent years and this one has now joined the ranks. ABC canceled Roseanne’s revival in 2018 after star Roseanne Barr made a controversial tweet but the show eventually returned as The Conners in the fall. Now in pre-production for Season 5, that show has come a long way.
Murray Goldberg Was Killed Off Between Seasons After Jeff Garlin Left
When Season 10 of The Goldbergs premieres, the cast and characters alike will be mourning a recent loss. After much deliberation, co-showrunner Alex Barnow revealed in August 2022 to EW that Murray Goldberg would be killed off between seasons. Barnow claims that the new season will begin several months after Murray’s off-screen death, suggesting that the characters have had time to grieve and move on with their lives. Further, Barnow stated that the new season will focus more on the future than on the past.
This fills us in on the latest developments surrounding Jeff Garlin’s departure from The Goldbergs and the show’s plans to move forward in his absence. Even though Garlin is no longer a part of the show, ABC is still advertising the comedy as a major draw for the 2022 fall schedule.
