Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley’s husband, Michael Haley, will soon begin a yearlong deployment to Africa with the South Carolina National Guard. At the same time, she campaigns for the Republican presidential nomination, CBS News has learned from a source close to the situation.
Haley’s husband is a major in the South Carolina National Guard, joining as an officer in 2006.
His deployment is anticipated to extend until spring 2024, while Nikki Haley, a former UN ambassador, and South Carolina governor, is campaigning.
Michael Haley will be deployed overseas for the second time. He deployed to Afghanistan’s Helmand Province with the South Carolina National Guard in 2013.
“When our loved one answers the call,” Haley said of her husband, “our family, like every military family, is ready to make personal sacrifices.”
The South Carolina National Guard has requested officers with Michael Haley’s skill set to deploy to support the United States Africa Command.
