From January to October of 2023, American politician Kevin Owen McCarthy presided as the 55th speaker of the House of Representatives. He is a Republican representative for California’s 20th congressional district, which includes the majority of the San Joaquin Valley.
From 2019 to 2023, McCarthy led the House Republican Conference. From 2019 until he was elected speaker in January 2023, he was the House Minority Leader. McCarthy, who was raised in Bakersfield, California, earned a degree from California State University, Bakersfield.
In 2002, he was elected to the U.S. House for the first time. He also served as a member of the California State Assembly until 2006. McCarthy was the majority whip of the House from 2011 to 2014 after serving as the senior deputy whip for the House Republicans from 2009 to 2011.
McCarthy was elected majority leader under Speaker John Boehner during the Republican primary in 2014, which saw House Majority Leader Eric Cantor lose his bid for reelection. Who is Kevin McCarthy’s Wife?
Since the beginning of his political career, Kevin McCarthy has had his wife, Judy McCarthy, at his side. Connor and Meghan are the couple’s two children, and they have been married for more than 30 years.
Judy has supported her husband throughout the years even though she has largely avoided the spotlight. It was a “humbling” time for their family, Judy told The Bakersfield Californian, when he was voted to be the House Majority Leader in 2014.
Kevin was elected speaker of the US House of Representatives in January 2023 following fifteen vote rounds, but he was removed from office nine months later. Kevin lost his position in a historic recall vote as Democrats allied with Republicans 216–210.
Far-right Republicans spearheaded the drive to remove Kevin from office because they had been seeking an excuse to remove him from office even before he was elected.
On August 29, 1992, three years after graduating from California State University, Bakersfield, Kevin and Judy he exchanged vows. In honor of his wife, he sent a heartfelt message on Facebook on their 23rd wedding anniversary.
“I’ve fallen in love many times… Always with you,” he wrote in the caption. “Happy Anniversary to my amazing wife Judy!”
Son Connor McCarthy was the couple’s first child, born in 1994, not long after they were married. Judy gave birth to their second child, a daughter named Meghan, two years later.

As a reward for Connor’s diligence in the classroom, Kevin invited him to several White House functions. At the same time, Connor was a student at Georgetown University, including the Japan state banquet in 2015.
Kevin revealed that his son had gotten married six years later. The former Speaker shared Connor’s wedding video on Instagram, showing that in December 2020, he was married to the “love of his life.”
“My son married the love of his life in December—and though the wedding was small, the love we have for them could not be bigger. ❤️,” he wrote in the caption. “I’m a very proud dad!”
After their father was elected Speaker of the House, Judy and Connor attended the U.S. Capitol building to support their father.
