In 1970, Lily worked as a comedian in New York when a friend connected her to Jane, a humorous writer four years older, thinking the two women could work well together. “A friend brought her to my hotel room and I tell you, in two minutes, I fell in love with her,” Lily said in 2020 to Variety.

“She was dressed in hot pants, stretchy boots that reached her knees, and a small backpack.” I’m not sure what it was, but I was head over heels in love.”

Lily said she flew back to New York the next day to ask Jane for a date. “I quickly called Jane and said, ‘Look, I don’t have much time, but I have to see you.’

“She agreed to see me, and we went on our first date,” the star explained. Jane added, “It was ecstatic when we found each other, aesthetically — and in every other way.”
