Darius Carlos Rucker was born in Charleston, South Carolina, on May 13, 1966. Rucker and his five siblings were raised by a single mother who worked as a nurse. Rucker often went to church. His father wasn’t in the picture, but when Rucker was growing up, he was in a Gospel band. Darius’s family was poor, but they always went to church. Even though he had money problems as a child, Rucker remembers those times with fondness. From a very young age, Darius dreamed of singing as a job.

Rucker met Mark Bryan, Jim Sonefeld, and Dean Felber when he attended the University of South Carolina. Hootie & the Blowfish is a rock band composed of four musicians.
