Early Life And Education
Clarence grew up in a military family because his father was in the US Air Force. Because of this, Clarence and his family moved around a lot, and he lived on Air Force bases in different parts of the US.
He was the second of six children born, and one of his brothers also joined the Air Force. He, on the other hand, went to Eisenhower High School. He was smart in school, but he often got into trouble. He had problems with women, alcohol, and sometimes drugs, so his parents made him move out so he could be away from the bad things in his life. He spent a year at the Air Force Academy but left to go to Sterling College, where he played American football for the college team.
Then, when he was in Long Beach, California, he discovered that he loved acting. He went to California State University, Long Beach to study acting.
Gilyard got his degree in acting from California State University, Dominguez Hills and looked for acting jobs while he was there. He did odd jobs and was a waiter for a short time to make money before getting a job at a clothing store. He was given the job of store manager, but he quit and went to work as a salesman for industrial chemicals, where he didn’t do as well.
In 1979, he moved to Los Angeles. His first acting job was in the play “Bleacher Burns,” where he played the cheerleader for the first time by a black actor. He then moved on to TV, where he appeared as a guest on shows like “Riptide,” “Different Strokes,” and “227.” In 1986, he got one of his first significant roles in the movie “Top Gun.” He played LTJG Marcus “Sundown” Williams, the F-14 Tomcat Rader Intercept Officer. Then he worked on “The Karate Kid Part II” before playing Theo, a computer expert, in “Die Hard,” a Bruce Willis movie.
Clarence was cast as private investigator Conrad McMasters on “Matlock” with Andy Griffith in 1989. He stayed in the role for four years, during the show’s first three seasons, but left after the show moved from NBC to ABC. He then got a big part in the “Walker, Texas Ranger”TV show with Chuck Norris. He played a fellow Ranger named James “Jimmy” Trivette, Norris’s best friend.
The show was a big hit, and he did a lot of stunts on it. He worked on it for the whole time it was on and became good friends with the other actors. Later, he had a small part in “Walker, Texas Ranger: Trial by Fire” before announcing in 2005 that he was leaving the acting business.
After taking a seven-year break from his job, he returned to it in 2012. However, he mostly worked on independent projects, like the movie “A Matter of Faith.” In 2016, he was in the movie “Driving Miss Daisy,” which came out at The Neil Simon Film Festival.
In “Madden 2018,” he also played the high school coach.
Clarence has been married twice. His first marriage was to Catherine, but they split up. He married Elena Castillo in 2001, and they have been together ever since. Between his two marriages, he has five children. He is a Catholic and works on the Communications Committee for the US Catholic Bishops.
He and Chuck Norris are very close friends because they have a lot in common, like their favorite Westerns and characters. Both of their parents were in the Air Force at different times. He thinks of the late Andy Griffith as his acting teacher because he helped him a lot when they both worked on “Matlock.”
