Wide receiver Michael Wilson played for the Stanford Cardinal football team and is now a professional player. Smith and Wilson first crossed paths as fellow Stanford Cardinal athletes.
While playing wide receiver for Stanford, Wilson saw both success and failure. There, he experienced a serious foot ailment that forced him to sit out of competition for a whole season. When Did Michael Wilson and Sophia Smith Start D@ting?
Wilson and Smith became friends while competing on the Stanford University football team. He was a talented freshman quarterback, and she was the women’s soccer team’s all-star kicker and captain. Wilson wrote a heartfelt letter to Smith on their 2020 anniversary after they announced their engagement on January 10, 2019.

Smith left Stanford after just two years on the soccer team in order to pursue the 2020 NWSL Draft. Smith wrote an emotional statement on Instagram explaining that she left Stanford to pursue a professional soccer career and that while it was a “difficult” decision, it was ultimately “a decision in which I followed my heart.”
Smith was selected first overall in the 2020 NWSL Draft by the Portland Thorns, moving her and her college teammate Smith from Palo Alto, California to Portland, Oregon. Smith relocated to Portland afterward, but Wilson stayed in northern California to pursue his football career. Smith, however, has relocated to Arizona after the 2023 NFL Draft.
