Alan Arkin Early Life
Alan Wolf Arkin was born on March 26, 1934, in Brooklyn, New York. Beatrice, his mother, was a teacher, and David, his father, was a writer, painter, and teacher. Alan grew up in a Jewish home with “no emphasis on religion,” and his grandparents came from Russia, Ukraine, and Germany.
Arkin’s family relocated to Los Angeles when he was 11 years old, where his father worked as a set designer until he was laid off owing to an eight-month strike in Hollywood. David and Beatrice were accused of being Communists during the 1950s Red Scare, and David was sacked from his teaching job after refusing to reveal his political membership.
Alan began taking acting training at the age of ten and has since received scholarships to various theatrical colleges. He attended Franklin High School, Los Angeles State College, and Vermont’s Bennington College before joining the Second City comedy troupe in the 1960s.

He appeared in the films “Hearts of the West” (1975), “Fire Sale” (1977), “The In-Laws” (1979), and “Simon” (1980), played Sigmund Freud in “The Seven-Per-Cent Solution” (1976), and appeared as a guest star on “Carol Burnett & Company” (1979), “The Muppet Show” (1980), and “St. Elsewhere” (1983).
