Richard Alexander Murdaugh was the second son and third child of Randolph Murdaugh III and Elizabeth “Libby” Alexander Murdaugh, a professional educator who later served as chairperson of the school board, according to the family history described in From the Salkehatchie to the Savannah. Richard Alexander Murdaugh was born in May 1968, the third of four children. He adopted the legal career of his older brother Randolph IV.

Murdaugh, raised by his wife’s friends as “Alex” and later referred to as “Big Red” by them, benefited from three generations’ worth of diligent, effective attorneys and prosecutors. Maggie was shot five times with an automatic rifle, while Paul was shot twice with a shotgun—once in the head and once in the chest. The victims were killed using two distinct types of weaponry. Until Mr. Murdaugh was ultimately charged in July 2022, it had been 13 months since their deaths and no arrests, suspects, or charges had been brought.
According to the prosecution, Mr. Murdaugh killed his wife and kid to divert attention from the other crimes and controversies engulfed him.
