Richard Alexander Murdaugh was the second son and third child of Randolph Murdaugh III and Elizabeth “Libby” Alexander Murdaugh, a professional educator who later served as chairperson of the school board, according to the family history described in From the Salkehatchie to the Savannah. “The Judge in the Alex Murdaugh case said Buster Murdaugh-the defendant’s 26 year old son-made a rude gesture (flipped the bird) toward a witness in the courtroom. Buster was admonished by the Judge. I don’t think I’m the only one who thinks all the Murdaugh males are punks.”

Maggie was shot five times with an automatic rifle, while Paul was shot twice with a shotgun—once in the head and once in the chest. The victims were killed using two distinct types of weaponry. Until Mr. Murdaugh was ultimately charged in July 2022, it had been 13 months since their deaths and no arrests, suspects, or charges had been brought.

According to the prosecution, Mr. Murdaugh killed his wife and kid to divert attention from the other crimes and controversies engulfed him.
