Where is Carl Lentz Now? What Actually Does He Do?

Carl Lentz, who joined Hillsong in 2010 and became the head of the New York chapter, mentored thousands of people through the faith, including A-list celebrities like Justin Bieber.

Although attracting a lot of attention, Carl was sacked a decade later for “leadership challenges and breaches of trust,” as well as “moral shortcomings” that the church refused to examine.

Churchgoers eventually discovered Carl was having many affairs. One of his mistresses, Ranin Karim, was featured prominently in the Discovery Plus docuseries Hillsong: A Megachurch Exposed. Furthermore, Carl’s former nanny, Leona Kimes, wrote an essay on Medium in May 2021 that detailed her employer’s bullying and s*xual abuse.

Carl Lentz was hired by Transformation Church, a predominantly Black, nondenominational megachurch in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on March 28, 2023. Michael Todd, a pastor, author, and renowned YouTuber, lead the organization.

“We warmly welcome Carl Lentz to our Transformation Church staff, where he will assist TC with strategy as we continue to move forward in our enormous vision,” said Tammy McQuarters, the church’s executive pastor of operations.

“Carl has demonstrated a willingness to use his God-given abilities for the local church again after two years of self-discovery and recovery. We believe in Carl, his marriage, skill set, and recovery.”

A source close to Carl told Religion News Service that he and his family relocated to Tulsa and attended Transformation Church. The 44-year-old former pastor has “launched a consulting and coaching business, and his clients include churches.” Tulsa was the right place for Carl’s family to “continue to heal and move forward,” said the source.

Carl Lentz will speak out in the FX Docuseries ‘Secrets of Hillsong’

Prior to news of his new employment, Variety claimed that the FX docuseries The Secrets of Hillsong would include the first interviews with Carl and his wife, Laura since they were fired as pastors.

The four-part docuseries will feature interviews with former congregants and others connected to the church based on Vanity Fair’s Alex French and Dan Adler’s investigation.

“Given the depth and clarity of this project owing to Vanity Fair’s superb research and the viewpoints of individuals speaking out for the first time, we have been devoted to creating a well-rounded and comprehensive account of Hillsong,” said Joel Chiod, head of the documentary at Scout Films.

Joel said, “Because of these voices, along with unprecedented access to Carl and Laura Lentz, The Secrets of Hillsong offers new insights into how decades of scandal and corruption went unchecked within the church, and more importantly, at what it meant for the community left in their rubble.”

Condé Nast Entertainment President Agnes Chu added, “We now know that power — and its systemic abuse over people seeking faith and community — is central to the Hillsong collapse, thanks to Alex French and Dan Adler’s excellent reporting and the bravery of those who came forward to share their stories. I’m grateful to Scout Productions and FX for assisting us in bringing this eye-opening story to life.”
