Early life

Gadde was born in India to a Telugu family. When he was three, his family moved to the United States.  Her father went to graduate school in the U.S., but he didn’t have enough money to send for his wife and daughter until Gadde was three years old.

Their new home is in Beaumont, Texas. She has talked about how the Ku Klux Klan’s presence in Beaumont affected her childhood. It was so bad that her Indian father’s boss told him to get permission from the local Klan before he could go door-to-door selling insurance.

Gadde got a Bachelor of Science in industrial and labor relations from Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations and a Juris Doctor from New York University School of Law in 2000.

Career

Before Gadde joined Twitter in 2011, he worked for almost a decade at the law firm Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati in Silicon Valley. She was also a senior director in the legal department of Juniper Networks, a Silicon Valley tech company. Gadde worked at WSGR on the $4.1 billion acquisition of McClatchy Co. by Knight Ridder Inc. in 2006 and was a lawyer for the New York Stock Exchange’s Proxy Working Group and Committee on Corporate Governance.

In 2018, she said that Twitter was hiring people to study how healthy the conversation was on the platform. In 2018, Gadde went to India with Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey to meet with Dalit activists and talk about their Twitter experiences. After the meeting, the activists gave Dorsey a sign that said “Smash Brahminical Patriarchy,” which he was later photographed holding. Some critics said the message was unfair to Brahmins, while others thought it was a good way to deal with the way women and people of certain castes are treated unfairly in India.

Gadde apologized for what he had done in a series of tweets. He said, “I’m very sorry for this. It doesn’t show what we think. We took a private picture with a gift that had just been given to us; we should have been nicer. Twitter tries to be a fair place where everyone can share their ideas. We didn’t do that here, and we need to get better at it if we want to serve our customers in India.

In 2019, she persuaded Twitter’s CEO at the time, Jack Dorsey, not to sell political ads during the 2020 U.S. presidential election. This was a high-profile move that was both praised and criticized. She was one of the most important people on Twitter who helped decide to shut down the account of the former president of the United States, Donald Trump. As Twitter’s chief legal officer in 2021, Gadde made close to $17 million. In 2020, he made about $7.3 million.

After Elon Musk said he would buy Twitter in 2022, people started to pay more attention to Gadde again. Musk disagreed with Twitter’s current rules, saying that the platform should only remove content if the law says so. He also said that Gadde was wrong to block a New York Post story about Hunter Biden.  During a virtual meeting with the policy and legal teams, Gadde was said to have expressed concerns and talked about a lot of unknowns about Twitter’s future if Musk were to lead it. Musk’s criticism of Gadde caused some controversy because Gadde received online abuse, including racist slurs, and because some people thought Musk may have broken the terms of the takeover agreement, which said he couldn’t say bad things about the company or its representatives on Twitter.

Musk’s comments were similar to other criticisms of Gadde, especially from the political right, which has called her Twitter’s “top censorship advocate” for her role in suspending the Twitter account of former U.S. President Donald Trump. It also comes after Twitter’s decision, which Gadde helped make, to stop users from sharing a New York Post story about Hunter Biden’s laptop during the 2020 U.S. election, when his father, Joe Biden, was running for office. Jack Dorsey later said that this choice had been the wrong one.  Others have defended Gadde, including his former colleagues and law professor Danielle Citron, who said that Gadde knew what it was like to be bullied online.

Twitter’s Chief Legal Officer, Elon Musk sent a letter to her on July 8, 2022, telling her to stop the purchase of Twitter.
