‘Vampire Diaries’ Cast: Where Are They Now? Ian Somerhalder, Nina Dobrev and More!

Horrors are galore: werewolves, vampires, and witches. The premiere of The Vampire Diaries in 2009 exposed viewers to one of the most iconic vampire-themed shows in history.

Mystic Falls, Virginia, is the fictional setting of the CW series that aired for eight seasons between 2012 and 2017. One of the most iconic love triangles in television history was brought to life by the series, alongside stories of humans turning into vampires or discovering they have powers (as in the case of Bonnie Bennett, played by Kat Graham).

Fans were put in an awkward position when teen Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) developed feelings for both vampires Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) and his bad boy sibling Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder). While Elena made her choice between Stefan and Damon during the eighth season, many viewers remain torn between Team Stefan and Team Damon.

After the 2017 series finale, producer Julie Plec told E! News, “The formula for a love triangle is as old as the recipe for gingersnap cookies, but the components, it’s something that you can’t control, which is chemistry.” So, as a writer, you can dream up whatever you like, but in the end, you need the love triangle’s three components for it to function.

 Ian Somerhalder

Somerhalder played Damon, a vampire, on TVD and then Luther Swann, a vampire researcher, on V-Wars, which he also produced. After that, he was cast in Time Framed and appeared on Good Mythical Morning. In 2020, the Louisiana native and his on-screen sibling Wesley launched Brother’s Bond Bourbon. They married in 2015, and the Lost star and his wife Nikki Reed now have a daughter named Bodhi.

Paul, Wesley

After playing Stefan Salvatore, the New Jersey native narrated the short film Aliens. Also in 2018, Wesley took on the role of Tucker Reed on Tell Me a Story. The actor has directed and produced several works, including the short films Ashmina and Anna and episodes of Legacies and Batwoman. After two years of marriage in 2013, Wesley filed for divorce from actress Torrey DeVitto. In 2019, he tied the knot with Ines de Ramon, another actress.

Nina, Dobrev

Dobrev, who played Elena Gilbert and her double Katherine Pierce, departed the show in 2015 but returned for the series finale in 2017. Gilbert was known for her romances with Stefan and Damon Salvatore. This talented Bulgarian went on to star in films including Flatliners, Dog Days, Run This Town, and Lucky Day. She also portrayed Clem on the canceled show Fam. With the upcoming picture Sick Girl, Dobrev will step into the role of producer for the first time. After three years together, the Us revealed in May 2013 that Dobrev and Somerhalder had broken up. The singer, who grew up in Canada, has been seeing snowboarder Shaun White since February of 2020. Along with Julianne Hough, the Fam alum released a line of low-calorie wines called Fresh Vine Wine in May of 2021. As with November 2021, you may watch Dobrev in the Netflix holiday film Love Hard.

Candice Accola

Accola has a recurring role in the 2018 TVD spinoff The Originals, where she plays Caroline Forbes, the cheerleading captain turned vampire. Then she was in After We Collided and Splitting the Bill. In 2018, she co-founded the podcast “Directionally Challenged” with her former co-star on “The Vampire Diaries,” Kayla Ewell. They married in 2014 and had their first kid in 2016. Joe King of The Fray is Accola’s husband. In December of 2020, the couple had their second child. In April of 2022, Accola filed for divorce, alleging “irreconcilable disagreements.”

Kat Graham

The witch Bonnie Bennett was played by the Switzerland-born actress for the entirety of the CW show’s eight-season run. All Eyes on Me, The Holiday Calendar, Fashionably Yours, and Cut Throat City were further film roles for her. On Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, she reprised her role as April O’Neil. This year (2017), Graham released his second solo album titled Love Music Funk Magic. Her latest hit, “Swim,” was released in August of 2021, and she has continued to put out new music.

Graham and fiance Cottrell Guidry broke up in December 2014, after being engaged for two years, the Us revealed. 2017 saw the end of her relationship with director and producer Darren Genet. We have verified that the couple became engaged in April of 2022 while on vacation in Mexico.

Zach Roerig

Matt Donovan, Roerig’s protagonist, was one of only a handful of human locals in Mystic Falls. Throughout the series, Matt dated several different characters, including Elena, Caroline, and others. The Ohio native has since made guest appearances on such shows as The Gifted, The Originals, and Legacies, and served as an executive producer on The Year of Spectacular Men. On USA Network’s Dare Me, he played Sarge Will Mosley. In 2013, Roerig made headlines when he sued his ex-girlfriend Alanna Turner for exclusive custody of their daughter Fiona, born in 2011. Custody of the child was granted to him finally.

Michael Trevino

Although Trevino’s tenure as the werewolf/hybrid Tyler Lockwood concluded in 2015, the actor made a brief return for a few episodes in 2016 and 2017. Soon after his performance as the legendary beast, he appeared in the films Out of Control, Sunset Park, and The Caption. In 2019, he will play Kyle Valenti in Roswell, New Mexico on The CW. The independent film Two Roads, which Trevino directed, premiered in June 2021. He posted a photo of a slate with his name on it and the caption, “New goals and challenges have been set,” on Instagram. This was my first time directing, and I couldn’t have done it without the support of New Mexico’s independent filmmaking community. For me, this moment has been a long time in the making. Having had this opportunity, I am thankful and excited to share more about this initiative in the upcoming weeks.

Director: Steven R. McQueen

This native Angeleno played Elena’s younger brother Jeremy Gilbert for six years. Before returning to TVD for the season 8 finale, McQueen played Jimmy Borelli on Chicago Fire and made a couple of guest appearances on Chicago P.D. The grandson of Steve McQueen also appeared in the films The Take Off, Home by Spring, and The Warrant. The actor has done charity work throughout his career, helping out with organizations like Smile Train, TECHO, the Thirst Project, and Echoes of Hope.

Matthew Davis

Upon the passing of their aunt Jenna Sommers (Sara Canning), Elena and Jeremy were placed under the guardianship of Davis’s character, Alaric Saltzman, a history teacher, and vampire hunter. The Utah native subsequently had an appearance on The Originals, and since 2018, she has starred in the TVD spinoff Legacies. Davis also appeared in the films Holiday Kisses and Christmas Wishes. The actress from “Legally Blonde” tied the knot with Kiley Casciano in 2018 and the pair welcomed their first child, Ripley, in March of 2020.
