Former Jacksonville Jaguars offensive lineman Uche Nwaneri died on Friday from congestive heart failure. He was found unresponsive by police. He was 38.

The reason why Uche Nwaneri died has left the community in tears. The Lafayette Journal & Courier says that Nwaneri drove from Georgia to Indiana to see his wife.

Friday morning at 1 a.m., she found him unconscious in a bedroom of her West Lafayette home. She called 911.

Tippecanoe County Coroner Carrie Costello said that the early results of an autopsy showed no signs of wrongdoing and that he may have died of a heart attack instead. She is waiting for the results of a toxicology test to find out what happened.

Who Was Uche Nwaneri?

Nwaneri was born in Dallas, Texas, in 1984. His parents had moved there from Nigeria in 1973. His parents named him Uchechukwu Nwaneri, which means “God’s wish” in their language.

He told the Lafayette Journal & Courier that he wanted to join the Purdue University football team in West Lafayette, Indiana.

He played for the Jacksonville Jaguars for seven years after they picked him in the fifth round of the NFL Draft in 2007. NBC Sports says that out of the 104 games he played for the Jaguars, 92 of them were as a starter. After he was cut from the team, he briefly played for his hometown team, the Dallas Cowboys, before being released at the end of the 2014 season.

After he left the NFL, he started a YouTube channel called “The Observant Lineman,” where he and other former players would talk about recent football games.

Just two weeks ago, he posted a show in which he broke down a play by the Philadelphia Eagles.
