TweetDeck.com Is Down, But TweetDeck Still Works

When I tried to log into TweetDeck today, I was surprised to find that it didn’t work.

When I started to type “tweetdeck” into my browser’s URL bar, it suggested the rest of the URL, “tweetdeck.com,” which is what I usually do. But when I hit the Enter key, my browser took a few seconds longer than usual to try to load TweetDeck. Then, on a mostly blank page, it showed me this error message:

upstream connect error or disconnect/reset before headers. reset reason: connection failure

I got the same error in two different Chrome profiles, which made me start to worry. I haven’t been tweeting as much since Elon Musk took over Twitter, but I still use my many TweetDeck columns and alerts as essential tools for my job.

Even though Twitter fired a lot of people and wiped out whole teams, TweetDeck kept working, and I was worried that my favorite tool for keeping up with tweets would be the next thing to go away now that Musk owns Twitter. (Some servers, microservices, and, if a planned auction goes through, company kitchen equipment are already on that list.)

But a coworker told me that TweetDeck was working for them, which made me feel better, and we figured out why.

It turns out that tweetdeck.com always gives me the error I was seeing, but tweetdeck.twitter.com works just fine to load TweetDeck. This seems to show that the problem with the shorter URL is a problem with Twitter’s redirection.

We weren’t the only ones who noticed what was going on. The same answer was tweeted by freelance writer Bob Bardsley on January 5, and many people thanked him in the replies.

So far as I can tell, Twitter hasn’t said anything official about it yet. It hasn’t said anything about it on its TweetDeck Twitter account, which hasn’t been tweeted since August (as of this writing) or on its Twitter Support account (which most recently tweeted on December 22nd, 2022). Even though the company no longer has a press office, it didn’t respond right away to a request for comment.

Even though there have been a lot of layoffs, and more this week, Twitter has mostly worked as usual, though there have been a few times when it didn’t. Aside from this strange redirect problem, TweetDeck has been working fine for me. Fingers crossed that someone at Twitter can figure out what’s going on, but in the meantime, I’ll type the full TweetDeck URL into my browser to get to my sweet, sweet columns.
