In a severe collision on the 10 Freeway in Riverside County early on Sunday, three people including two little girls were murdered and seven others were hurt.
The collision occurred in Whitewater, a city 15 minutes northwest of Palm Springs, around 7:30 in the morning. California Highway Patrol officers arrived at the site on the 10 Freeway eastbound just west of Haugen-Lehmann Way.
According to a CHP news release, a preliminary investigation revealed that a black 2022 Tesla Model 3 was being driven by a 31-year-old Indio male in the number three lane while he was heading eastbound on the 10 Freeway, west of Haugen-Lehmann Way.
The vehicles collided for an undetermined reason, which authorities are still looking into when a red 2001 Chevrolet Suburban driven by a 39-year-old Anaheim resident drove in the other way in the number two lane.
Due to the incident, the driver of the Suburban lost control and slammed into the center barrier. The hit forced the car to flip over, throwing six passengers out. A seventh passenger was thrown out in pieces.
At the site, three people were pronounced dead: a 10-year-old child, a 12-year-old girl, and a 31-year-old woman.
A 3-year-old girl, a 7-year-old girl, an 11-year-old girl, and a 15-year-old male were among four other passengers who, according to authorities, suffered severe injuries and were transported to the hospital by helicopter.

The Suburban’s driver suffered minor injuries, while the passenger, a 41-year-old, was slightly hurt.
The announcement stated that “all occupants within the Chevrolet were relatives and residents of Anaheim, California.” That preliminary evidence indicates that not all of the passengers in the Suburban were using “safety restraint systems or seatbelts.”

The 31-year-old man in the Tesla was uninjured in the accident. Authorities did not say whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
The 10 Freeway experienced a primary backup as eastbound lanes at Main Street were closed for investigation and cleanup.
Traffic was diverted off Main Street to Railroad Avenue, where vehicles could get back on eastbound Interstate 10 at Haugen-Lehmann Way. All lanes of the eastbound 10 Freeway were opened at 3:30 p.m.
