The Woman in the Wall Release Date: When The Woman In The Wall airs on BBC1 and Showtime, it will reveal the consequences of one of Ireland’s most horrifying scandals: the cruel “Magdalene Laundries” institutions.

It centers on Ruth Wilson from “His Dark Materials” and Daryl McCormack from “Bad Sisters,” It chronicles the horrors that occur to Irish woman Lorna Brady after she discovers a dead body in her home one morning.

Along with the creator and BAFTA Award nominee Joe Murtagh (Calm With Horses) and BAFTA Award nominee Harry Wootliff, who also directs some episodes, Ruth Wilson will also executive produce the six-part series for Motive Pictures.

What is the Plot of the Woman in the Wall?

In one of Ireland’s Magdalene Laundries or Magdalene asylums, The Woman In The Wall will take place. First, some background on the horrifying Magdalene Laundries: these nun-run institutions housed women who had fallen out of social order due to “adultery or teenage pregnancies” from the 18th century through the late 20th century.

The ladies were well known to be subjected to physical and psychological torture and forced labor while there. It is estimated that at least 10,000 women were detained in these facilities over two centuries.

Wilson plays the part of Lorna Brady in the BBC series, a woman who resides in the made-up town of Kilkinure. Lorna was sectioned at the Magdalene Laundries’ Kilkinure Convent when she was 15. Because of what she had through there, Lorna still struggles with the trauma and has severe sleepwalking episodes.

One morning, Lorna awakens to discover a body inside her home. She doesn’t know the girls and doesn’t know if she killed them, girls.

Making matters worse, Lorna is being pursued by Detective Colman Akande (played by McCormack) for a separate offense unrelated to the murder. The show incorporates a lot of levels of dark humor and psychological dread into its detective plot.

The Woman in the Wall Cast

The protagonists of the Gothic thriller are Daryl McCormack as Detective Akande and Ruth Wilson as Lorna Brady. Wilson’s numerous television credits (Luther, The Affair, His Dark Materials) may help viewers recognize her, and Peaky Blinders fans may recognize McCormack as Isaiah Jesus.

McCormack recently appeared in the film Good Luck To You, Leo Grande alongside Emma Thompson.

After the series was announced, Wilson said, “Lorna Brady is a complex and fascinating character and I’m thrilled to help bring her to life. In The Woman in the Wall, Joe has created an enthralling gothic thriller and a moving examination of the legacy of The Magdalene Laundries. It’s a privilege to bring this story to screens.”
