The return of Brendan Fraser may now get underway. A first trailer for the upcoming thriller “The Whale,” directed by Darren Aronofsky, has been published by A24. In the film, Brendan Fraser plays a dad who suffers from obesity and has a difficult time reconnecting with his daughter, who is 17 years old.
This is Aronofsky’s first directorial attempt since his last picture, “mother!,” which received mixed reviews from reviewers and audience members. The first trailer for “The Whale” was released shortly after it was announced that the film will have its debut in front of an international audience at the 2022 Venice Film Festival.

Alongside Fraser, “Stranger Things” star Sadie Sink, “Stranger Things” newcomer Hong Chau, and “Stranger Things” veterans Samantha Morton and Ty Simpkins all star in “The Whale.” Aronofsky is working once more with his longtime cinematographer Matthew Libatique, who was also the cinematographer for the premiere of “Don’t Worry Darling” starring Olivia Wilde in Venice.
Every film that Darren Aronofsky has made to this point has been photographed by Libatique, with the exception of “The Wrestler,” which was shot by Maryse Alberti. When asked about his performance in “The Whale,” Fraser said with Unilad the previous year, “It’s going to be like something you haven’t seen before,” and added, “That’s basically all I can tell you…
Both the outfit and the costume were substantial, well-fitting, and hefty. This is in no way comparable to anything else I’ve ever done, yet without trying to be evasive… I have no doubt that it will leave a strong and abiding effect.
Although Fraser appeared in Steven Soderbergh’s “No Sudden Movie” as a supporting character in 2018, “The Whale” represents a significant comeback for the actor in his first main role since the action film “Breakout,” which was released directly to DVD in 2013.
