Teen Suspect in Nyc Boy’s Shooting Caught Upstate After a Month of Run

According to law enforcement authorities, a teenager has been arrested upstate in connection with the September shooting death of a 15-year-old kid who was killed in a Brooklyn park. Wesley Walker, 16 years old and on the run for almost five months, was caught early Wednesday morning in Binghamton, sources told The Post.

Sources say he was charged with murder after Unique Smith was shot in the stomach by one of two masked bandits who had asked him what gang he was in on September 8.

Smith, a Brooklyn Laboratory Charter Schools student, was sitting with two girls his age on a bench in McLaughlin Park at 1:40 p.m. when the suspects came up to him and asked him questions, according to authorities and sources.

“The male – who is described as wearing all black and a black mask – removed a firearm firing one time and striking our victim.”

The two suspects then fled the park on Tillary Street towards Adams, Essig said.

Essig said at least 30 other people were in the park at the time. The teen was pronounced dead at Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. Smith’s grandfather, Kenneth Davis, told The Post at the time that he would pay $5,000 to anyone who could find out who killed his grandson.

“Put that in your paper: A $5,000 reward from the grandfather,” he said. Davis said the teen’s family – including his mother – were “falling apart” at the news of his death.

Davis said about Smith-

“He’s a terrific young man,”  “He helps around the house. He’s energetic. He’s just an average 15-year-old. It’s sad.”

Davis said he didn’t know why someone would do this to his grandson.

“I just hope we catch these idiots that are running around with these guns,” Davis said. “It’s just sad that these guns are flooding into the community. The police are doing everything they could but guns keep pouring in here.“

Police said there was no sign that Smith was a gang member. Mary Beloti, the teen’s 64-year-old neighbor, agreed.

She told The Post in September, “Absolutely not.” “I really can’t wrap my head around it. He is an amazing young man. Young man with a lot of respect. He went to school, listened to music, and played video games, but he never bothered anyone.

Beloti said, though, that people in the area did worry about Smith’s new group of friends.

She said, “He wasn’t in trouble.” “I think it was the people he hung out with. All of us were worried about the boys he hung out with.

She added, “These new boys.” “Not his old friends, but these new boys.”
