Bring them to church! Sister Act lifted the veil on what it’s like to be a nun — and gave birth to a musical film with a 30-plus-year legacy.
In the 1992 film Whoopi Goldberg portrayed Deloris Van Cartier, a lounge singer who joins a convent after being placed in witness protection.
She forms life-long friendships with Sister Mary Patrick (Kathy Najimy), Sister Mary Lazarus (Mary Wickes), and Sister Mary Robert (Wendy Makkena) after adopting the persona of Sister Mary Clarence to stay safe until she testifies against her ex-boyfriend Vince (Harvey Keitel), whom she saw kill someone in Reno, Nevada.
While Sister Mary Clarence has a challenging relationship with Mother Superior (Maggie Smith), the pair eventually come together when the showgirl builds buzz around the church’s choir and sparks joy in the community.
Sister Act: Back in the Habit, a 1993 sequel to the first film, saw the return of all four nuns, including Sister Mary Clarence. Deloris pauses her Las Vegas show to go undercover as a nun to help her friends save St. Francis High School from closure.
The sequel introduced additional characters, including high school students Rita (Lauryn Hill), Maria (Alanna Ubach), and Margaret (Jennifer Love Hewitt). The two box-office hits spawned a Broadway musical, which debuted regionally in 2006 before making its West End debut in 2009.
Nearly three decades after Sister Act captivated audiences, Goldberg unveiled plans for a third picture.
“For a long time, they kept saying no one wanted to see it,” the View cohost stated on an episode of The Late Late Show With James Corden airing in October 2020.
“However, it has lately come to light that this may not be the case. People might be interested in seeing it. So we’re working hard to figure out how to get the gang together and back again.”
