Sal Bando died on Saturday at the age of 78. He was a four-time All-Star in Major League Baseball (MLB) and a three-time World Series champion.

“It is with a heavy heart the Bando family is sad to announce the passing of their husband and father, Sal,” who on Friday, January 20, lost “his battle with cancer that began over five years ago,” the Bando family said in a statement.

“Sal’s wife of 54 years, Sandy, and his three sons, Sal Jr., Sonny, and Stef, send their love to his family, friends, and fans who are saddened by his death.”

The Athletics said in a statement, “We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Athletics Hall of Famer Sal Bando,”

“The fans of the A’s called him “Captain Sal,” He was an All-Star four times and led the team to three straight World Series titles. His family, friends, and fans have our deepest condolences.”
