What Were Richard Belzer’s Last Words?
A longtime friend of the actor Bill Scheft, a writer, told The Hollywood Reporter that Belzer passed away early on Sunday at his house in Bozouls, southwest France. His final words were “‘F**k you, motherf**ker,” according to Scheft. He had a number of health difficulties.
On the television shows Homicide: Life on the Street and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Belzer is best known for playing John Munch. During more than two decades and ten shows, Belzer portrayed a wisecracking homicide detective. He also rose to fame for his appearances in Arrested Development and 30 Rock.
He initially appeared as Detective John Munch on an episode of Homicide in 1993, and he last appeared as him in a 2016 episode of Law & Order: SVU. It’s interesting to note that Belzer never went for the part. Belzer was invited to read for the part by executive producer Barry Levinson after hearing him on “The Howard Stern Show.”
In an interview Belzer said:
“I would never be a detective. But if I were, that’s how I’d be.”
“They write to all my paranoia and anti-establishment dissidence and conspiracy theories. So it’s been a lot of fun for me. A dream, really.”
What Were Richard Belzer’s Health Issues?
Testicular cancer was found in 1992 by Belzer while he was taking a bath, leading to his diagnosis.
In an interview with The Washington Post, Belzer told:
“Being diagnosed with testicular cancer was like a cosmic slap in the face.”
“My reaction was, ‘How do I get rid of it, and can I have s*x?’ “
Richard Belzer, a Connecticut native, had a successful career and a large global following. He actually holds the distinction of being the first actor in TV history to portray the same role in 11 different action programs.
