Reginald Howard White was an American football player who played defensive end for 15 seasons in the National Football League (NFL) during the 1980s and 1990s.

After two professional seasons with the Memphis Showboats of the United States Football League (USFL), he was picked in the first round of the 1984 Supplemental Draft. He then played for the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles, Green Bay Packers, and Carolina Panthers, becoming one of the most honored defensive players in NFL history.

With 198 sacks, the two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, 13-time Pro Bowler, and 13-time All-Pro holds the second-most sacks in NFL history. He was chosen for the NFL’s 75th Anniversary All-Time Team, 100th Anniversary All-Time Team, 1990s All-Decade Team, and 1980s All-Decade Team.

As an ordained Evangelical minister, he was also known for his Christian ministry, which gave him the nickname “the Minister of Defense” during his work life. A medical team from Cornelius, North Carolina, took White to a hospital in neighboring Huntersville, North Carolina, on the morning of December 26, 2004, where he was later pronounced dead.

NFL great Reggie White may have died because of a respiratory disease combined with other health problems, a preliminary autopsy report said Dec. 27. White most likely had a condition that affected the air his lungs could hold, resulting in “fatal cardiac arrhythmia,” said Dr.

The most likely cause of White’s death, according to the Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner’s Office, was the cardiac and pulmonary sarcoidosis he had had for years.

People also said that White’s sleep apnea, which he was known to have, may have had something to do with his death. Reports about the death of Reggie White have shown how dangerous obstructive sleep apnea and other breathing problems can be.

According to the Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner’s Office, Reggie White died of heart and lung sarcoidosis.

After hearing about Reggie White’s death, his wife Sara started the Reggie White Sleep Disorders Research and Education Foundation to help people with sleep disorders and try to stop what happened to Reggie White from happening to other people, no matter how rich or poor they are.
