Raquel Welch, an actress from the U.S., has died at the age of 82. Today, she is often credited with paving the way for action heroines in Hollywood movies.

According to her manager, the famous person died peacefully Wednesday morning after a short illness.

In the 1960s, Welch played a bikini-wearing cavewoman in the movie One Million Years B.C., which made her a sex icon around the world. She also got a Golden Globe for her part in The Three Musketeers, which came out in 1974.

Welch was born Jo-Raquel Tejada in 1940. She grew up in California, where she won teen beauty contests and later became a local weather forecaster.

During a short time in Dallas, Texas, the divorced mother of two worked as a model for Neiman Marcus and as a cocktail waitress. Soon after she moved back to California in 1964, she got cameo roles in Elvis Presley’s movies A House Is Not a Home and Roustabout. This was her big break.

Two years later, she became well-known for her roles in the science fiction movie Fantastic Voyage and the fantasy movie One Million Years B.C.

Welch only had a few lines in the latter, but promotional stills of her wearing a skimpy two-piece deerskin bikini made her a leading pin-up girl of the time.

Despite her public image, however, she long expressed discomfort with the representation of her body, once saying she “was not brought up to be a sex symbol, nor is it in my nature to be one.”

“The fact that I became one is probably the loveliest, most glamorous, and fortunate misunderstanding,” she added.

Welch also talked about her image in her memoir, Raquel: Beyond the Cleavage, in which she spoke of her childhood, her early career troubles as a single mother in Hollywood, and why she would never lie about her age.

Later in life, she made her line of wigs, jewelry, and skincare products and a string of makeup for Mac Cosmetics.

Actress Reese Witherspoon was among those paying tribute, writing on Twitter that she “loved” working with Welch on Legally Blonde.

“She was elegant, professional, and glamorous beyond belief,” said Witherspoon. “Simply stunning.”
