Police Pursuit Shoots Florida Mass Shooting Suspect

After a high-speed chase and a carjacking, a police officer fatally shot a guy accused in a mass shooting in central Florida last month.

Alex Greene, 21, drove his automobile into a Winter Haven, Florida, building. Lakeland Police Chief Sammy Taylor says 11 people were injured in a shooting on January 30. That location is not far from Lakeland.

“We are very confident he was in fact involved; to what extent we don’t know yet,” Taylor said.

Taylor stated that police had wanted to interview Greene about the shooting that occurred on January 30 in a residential area near downtown Lakeland, located roughly 30 miles (50 kilometers) east of Tampa, based on an outstanding burglary warrant.

At a news conference, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said that Greene got into a pickup truck and began to drive away as investigators from the Lakeland Police Department, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement conducted surveillance.

The Lakeland PD gave chase along a busy thoroughfare.

Police Capt. Eric Harper was driving an unmarked vehicle and tried to stop Greene “so that we don’t have this pursuit on a very busy road,” Judd said.

After completing the pit maneuver, Greene jumped out of the car and ran into oncoming traffic.

“Why he and the captain weren’t run over is just the grace of God because traffic was all over the place,” Judd said.

Judd stated that when Greene saw he was trapped, he went toward a restaurant where a woman was waiting by her open car doors. As soon as the woman spotted Greene, she slammed the passenger door and attempted to close the driver’s door.

According to Judd, Greene shoved the woman away and got into the car. Harper came at me, rifle in hand.

“The suspect takes off in her car, drives toward Capt. Harper, who shoots six times,” Judd said. The car continues down a road, weaves through flower beds and crashes into a building.”

Greene was extricated from the vehicle by police, who promptly began administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation. At the hospital, doctors pronounced him dead.

“No one else was injured in the pursuit, which we are all grateful for,” Judd said.

Judd said Greene had a history of 10 criminal convictions, including evading authorities, assaulting an officer, having weapons in his possession, and resisting arrest. An arrest warrant for him had been issued for burglary and conspiracy.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office are conducting separate investigations into the shooting.

Two of the eight victims shot on January 30 were in serious condition, but their injuries were not life-threatening. According to the authorities, all the victims were males aged 20 to 35.

Police say that in the afternoon, a car passed through the area and the passengers shot out of all four windows. They didn’t say much about any other possible shooters, though.

Officials said they believe the shooting was a “targeted attack.”
