At age 81, Paul Simon released his latest studio album, Seven Psalms, in April 2023. The legendary singer/songwriter, whose career spans six decades, had some surprising news to accompany the album: he suffered from severe hearing loss while working on it.
“Quite suddenly, I lost most of my hearing in my left ear, and nobody knows why,” Paul told The Times. “As a result, everything became more difficult. My initial emotion was aggravation and displeasure, not nearly rage because I assumed it would pass and repair itself.”
Unfortunately, the damage did not repair itself. The “You Can Call Me Al” hitmaker, who teased the new album on Instagram, hesitates to perform in public due to hearing loss.

Paul Simon’s Farewell Tour Delighted Fans in 2018
After five studio albums with Simon and Garfunkel and 13 as a solo artist, Paul retired from touring in 2018 with “Homeward Bound – The Farewell Tour.”
This significant tour took him across North America, the United Kingdom, and Europe, culminating with a performance at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in New York City, near where he grew up.
“I’ve often wondered what it would feel like to reach the point where I’d consider bringing my performing career to a natural end,” Paul remarked via his official website. Now I understand: it’s a bit disconcerting, refreshing, and relieving.”
