Paul Mescal To Star In Ridley Scott’s Gladiator Sequel

The sequel to the epic 2000s movie “Gladiator” is coming back almost 25 years after the first movie came out.

Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator 2” will have “Normal People” and “Aftersun” breakout star Paul Mescal step into the arena. Mescal has big shoes to fill, since Russell Crowe won an Oscar for the Hollywood movie, but he will play Lucius, the son of Lucilla, who Connie Nielsen played in the first movie. The news came from Variety, which was reported by Deadline.

Scott is set to direct again and also produce with Scott Free President Michael Pruss, Doug Wick, and Lucy Fisher through their company Red Wagon Entertainment. David Scarpa wrote the script.

Even though DreamWorks and Universal worked together on the first film, DreamWorks will not be a part of “Gladiator 2.” But once production is set up, Universal has the right to work on the project again. Mescal is also in “Strangers,” which is directed by Andrew Haigh and stars Andrew Scott and Claire Foy.

At the same time, Scott is making the movie “Napoleon” with the actor Joaquin Phoenix. In 2020, Crowe said that getting an Oscar for his role in “Gladiator” made him feel bad.

In an interview for the Australian show “Today,” Crowe said that Scott should have gotten more credit for how well the movie did.

The actor said, “[After starring in ‘Gladiator,’] I got so many pats on the back and, you know, some big awards and all that, and obviously that put me on a different level for a long time.”

Crowe felt bad about his awards when he saw “Gladiator” again at a live screening at the Colosseum in Rome.

“I saw that movie, and it is a film made by the director. It was one of those times when you wonder, “Why am I getting all the attention when Ridley Scott won the Oscar?” “he said.

“Gladiator” also won Oscars for best picture, sound, visual effects, and costume design.
