You might have been confused when NVIDIA released two GeForce RTX 4080 models with very different features. You’re not alone. NVIDIA is taking the 12GB RTX 4080 off the market because it might be confusing. Even though the company still thinks the 12GB version is a good video card, it said that the name of the lower-spec model is “not right.” The company didn’t say if or how it might bring back the card, and when asked for more information, it didn’t give any.
NVIDIA cancels the GeForce RTX 4080 („Unlaunching The 12GB 4080“) with 12 GB video memory. I would like to know what the AIBs are thinking about this. They must have started production already, don’t they? pic.twitter.com/cKn0qRMQPo

The NVIDIA Founders Edition of the 16GB RTX 4080 will still come out on November 16 and cost $1,199. This means that the base price of RTX 40-level hardware goes up. Mind you, this might not be as bad as it sounds. The 12GB version was supposed to start at $899, but since it was made by third-party companies, the real-world price was likely to be higher.

Most of the confusion in the messages comes from differences that go beyond the amount of RAM. The lower-end 12GB model has 7,680 CUDA cores and a 192-bit memory bus, while the higher-end model has 9,728 cores and a 256-bit bus. Even though it says “RTX 4080,” the 12GB GPU is much slower, and sometimes the difference is very large. NVIDIA’s own tests showed that the 12GB board was up to 30% slower than the 16GB board in popular games. That could be more than a little disappointing if you bought the 12GB card thinking it would work the same way outside of situations where RAM is needed.
NVIDIA won’t have to deal with too much trouble because of the cancellation. Stores reportedly had lines for the launch of the RTX 4090, and the 4080 could be the go-to GPU for gamers who can’t quite afford the $1,599 flagship.

Still, it’s not often that a company makes a mistake like this one. NVIDIA misread the market so badly that it had to stop making graphics cards before they could be sold.
