The birth of Onika Tanya Maraj took place on December 8th, 1982, in the Saint James neighbourhood of Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.  Her father was the financial executive and occasional gospel musician Robert Maraj. who was of Dougla (Afro-Trinidadian mother and Indo-Trinidadian father) heritage.
