Sam Westmoreland, a player on the football team at Mississippi State, has died, the school said Wednesday. He was 18 at the time.

Westmoreland was from Tupelo, Mississippi, and was a preferred walk-on for the Bulldogs in his first year with the team. Westmoreland was a star offensive lineman at Tupelo High School, where he stood 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighed 260 pounds. At MSU, he was studying industrial technology.

No reason for death was given. Mississippi State said that it was “working together” with the athletic department and local police to “find out what happened.” The school “won’t say anything else until that assessment is done.”

“The sudden death of Sam Westmoreland has devastated the Mississippi State Athletics family,” MSU head coach Mike Leach said in a statement. “Sam was a great young man with a bright future. He was a loved son, brother, and teammate. Everyone who knew and loved him will always remember him and miss him very much.”
