Michael Jordan’s ‘Last Dance’ Jersey Sells for $10 Million

Jordan is widely regarded as the sport’s greatest American basketball player. Jordan, or “MJ” as he is more well known, spent 15 years in the NBA, split between the Chicago Bulls and the Washington Wizards. Michael Jordan earned two gold medals with the United States national basketball team and six NBA titles with the Chicago Bulls.

In 1981, Jordan enrolled in North Carolina and was immediately honored as the best freshman in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Jordan averaged 17.7 points per game and 5.0 rebounds per game during his three years at North Carolina. In 1983 and 1984, he was named to the first team of NCAA All-Americans. Jordan entered the NBA draft in 1984.

Michael Jordan was the Rookie of the Year with the Chicago Bulls after being drafted third overall. By combining forces with Scottie Pippen, Jordan led the Chicago Bulls to three consecutive NBA titles in the 1991, 1992 and 1993 seasons. Michael Jordan retired from basketball in 1993, citing a lack of interest in the sport. While playing for the Bulls, Michael Jordan won a second consecutive NBA championship treble from 1996 to 1998.

A Michael Jordan shirt sells for more than $10 million, breaking a new record.

A jersey worn by the legendary basketball player Michael Jordan was recently sold at auction for a record-breaking price of $10.1 million, making it the most expensive item of game-worn sports memorabilia ever purchased in a live event.

The lot was purchased on Thursday during the first portion of Sotheby’s “INVICTUS” auction, which was dedicated to selling sports memorabilia. According to Sotheby’s, the bright red shirt emblazoned with “Bulls 23” received 20 bids.

During the first game of the 1998 NBA Finals, Michael Jordan wore the jersey. The Chicago Bulls, on which he played, would triumph over the Utah Jazz and claim the title of NBA champions.

Because it marked the end of a remarkable winning streak for the Bulls in the 1990s that included six NBA titles, this season is commonly referred to as Michael Jordan’s “Last Dance.” After that, in 1999, Jordan decided to take a little retirement. He resumed his playing career in 2001 and continued for another two years. Jordan took his retirement in 2003 when he was 40 years old.

The jersey broke the previous record for game-used memorabilia, which was held by a jersey worn by the late soccer player Diego Maradona during the 1986 World Cup and sold for $9.28 million. The jersey set a new record.

With a price tag of $12.6 million, a baseball card featuring Mickey Mantle from 1952 that Topps issued still maintains the title for typically being the most valuable piece of sports memorabilia ever sold at an auction.

Additionally, the jersey is believed to be the most valuable artifact related to Michael Jordan that has ever been offered for sale at auction. A pair of sneakers he wore during his debut season with the Bulls sold for nearly $1.5 million in 2021 after being auctioned.

Brahm Wachter, the head of streetwear and modern collectibles at Sotheby’s, spoke with NPR about the frenzy that Jordan’s jersey stirred up among keen collectors and sports enthusiasts. Jordan himself signed the jersey.

He stated that the “record-breaking result, with an astounding 20 bids, solidifies Michael Jordan as the undisputed GOAT, proving his name and incomparable legacy is just as relevant as it was nearly 25 years ago.” He also said that the “result proves that his name and incomparable legacy is just as relevant as it was nearly 25 years ago.”
