Mexican Border Prison Attack Leaves 14 People Dead

Officials say that a brazen armed attack on a prison in the Mexican border city of Juarez on Sunday killed at least 14 people.

In a statement, the office of the Chihuahua state attorney general said that 10 security guards, 4 prisoners, and 13 other people were killed or hurt.

Around 7 a.m. (9 a.m. ET) on Sunday, gunmen in armored vehicles drove up to the prison and started shooting at security staff, according to the prosecutor’s office.

Authorities say that 24 prisoners took advantage of the situation and got away. No one knew right away who was behind the attack.

In the area, the rival Juarez and Sinaloa cartels have been fighting a bloody turf war over lucrative drug smuggling routes and where to sell drugs in the city.

Violence like what happened on Sunday is not the first time it has happened at the prison. In August last year, hundreds of Mexican soldiers were sent there after a fight between two drug cartels led to riots and gunfights that killed 11 people.
