Memorials Erected To Honor Reedsburg Area Student Who Tragically Lost Life At School Bus Stop

Memorials are growing in Reedsburg for a Sauk County youngster who was hit and ki!!ed while waiting to board a school bus on Friday morning.

On Friday and Saturday, community members left chalk memorials to the victim on the floor of the Reedsburg Area Community Arena.

The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office has not recognized the victim, but friends and a GoFundMe page have identified her as Evelyn Gurney. According to her pals, Gurney enjoyed playing hockey and was competitive.

“She just loved being on the ice,” Molly Stokes, a teammate, and friend, stated. Stokes stated that she would remember Gurney’s constant happiness.

“She always put everyone else in a better mood,” another friend, Ellie Vielhuber, said. “She was just kind; she never really wanted to hurt anyone’s feelings.”

Vielhuber helped set up a GoFundMe page for Gurney’s family. As of mid-afternoon Saturday, the GoFundMe had raised more than $53,000.

She said she did not expect the effort to accomplish its $1,000 objective. Both girls expressed gratitude to the community for its overwhelming support since the tragedy. By Saturday afternoon, another tribute of flowers and a wreath had been erected at the disaster site.

The school bus was stopped in the westbound lane of State Highway 23/33 east of Reedsburg around 7:23 a.m. for a pickup when a driver driving a Ford F-150 failed to slow down in time to halt, according to the sheriff’s office.

The truck then impacted the bus before colliding with Gurney, who died at the scene. The crash is still being investigated.
