American actor, novelist, and academic lecturer Kal Penn (born Kalpen Suresh Modi on April 23, 1977) is a former member of the Obama administration’s White House staff. Famous roles include that of White House aide Seth Wright in Designated Survivor and lovable rogue Kumar Patel in the Harold & Kumar film series, among others. He also received praise for his role in The Namesake. While at Penn, Penn was a visiting lecturer in the Cinema Studies Department.

Penn began working for the Obama administration at the White House Office of Public Engagement as the Principal Associate Editor in April of 2009. This resulted in the removal of his character, Lawrence Kutner, from the hit show House. In June of 2010, Penn took a leave of absence to film A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas, the third film in the Harold & Kumar franchise. After filming wrapped, he went back to work at the White House. Back out of the White House in July 2011, he accepted a role on How I Met Your Mother.

Kalpen Suresh Modi was born in Montclair, New Jersey to parents of Indian origin who had emigrated from Gujarat. Asmita Bhatt, his mother, works as a fragrance evaluator for a perfume company, and Suresh Modi, his father, is an engineer. His mother is from Baroda and his father hails from Kaira.
