Jamal was born on February 23, 1997, in Kitchener, Ontario. He went to Grand River Collegiate Institute before transferring to Orangeville Prep School. One of Murray’s most historical moments is his 20.0 points per game by any freshman in Kentucky’s program history. Jamal started his college life in June 2015, he was restricted to Kentucky to play under Coach John Calipari’s leadership. During his first year he appeared in 36 games and gained 20.0 average points, with 5-2 rebounds, and 2.2 assists 40.8% in shooting from the three-point range. He was also named to the 35-man midseason watchlist. Later, after his freshman season, he was named a third-team All-American by the Associated Press.

Finally, in April 2016, he was declared for the NBA draft, which led him to leave his final three years of college eligibility.

He was selected by the Denver Nuggets as the seventh overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, officially, Jamal began his professional career in June 2016. On 9th August 2016, He signed a contract with the Nuggets as a rookie. In November 2016, he scored a career-high 19 points in a game 112-105 with Portland Trail Blazers, which led to their loss.
