The new Scooby-Doo movie, Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!, is a classic Scooby-Doo story with lots of twists and turns, mysteries, and lies. The new adventure movie for kids has become known for one thing, though: the fact that the cartoon character Velma Dinkley is gay.
Velma is a key member of the Scooby-Doo team, which also includes Scooby, Shaggy, Daphne, and Fred. She is known as the shyest person in the group, and her orange jumper and glasses are her trademarks. But is Velma gay?

Some clips from the new movie showed Velma falling in love with a new character named Coco Diablo. Jinkies, indeed!
She is the first LGBTQ+ person to join the team, which is a step in the right direction for how LGBTQ+ people are seen and portrayed on kids’ TV shows and movies.
Has Velma always been gay?
Since the Scooby-Doo kid’s movie came out in 2002, Velma has been gay from a technical point of view. James Gunn, who is best known for making the Guardians of the Galaxy movies about superheroes, wrote the screenplay for Scooby-Doo. He wanted the main character to be gay in the 2000s movie.
Gunn said that in the first draft of the movie, Velma was written to be “explicitly gay.” Gunn says that the studio toned down her sexuality with each rewrite, and in the final cut, there was no mention of her sexuality at all.
So, Velma has been gay for at least 20 years. Scooby-Doo is finally getting used to this, and he’s having a lot of fun along the way.
