There have been several extremely terrible modern horror series released in recent years. Most fans of the horror genre would agree that James Wan’s The Conjuring is among the best of all time, but some would counter that we wouldn’t have had such a masterpiece without Insidious. The long wait (nearly five years) is over, and after considerable work on the fifth film over the past few years, Insidious: Chapter 5 will be released on July 12, 2019. This underrated horror franchise will return to theatres on July 7, 2023.

All we’ve heard about the film’s development since series star Patrick Wilson revealed in February that filming would begin in the spring of 2022 is that this is great news. Wilson, who plays Josh Lambert in the series, returns for the first time since his cameo in Insidious: Chapter 3 and makes his directorial debut as a horror icon with this sequel. Ty Simpkins will also return in his role as Dalton, Josh’s son. There isn’t much information available about Insidious 5, but we do know that it takes set ten years after the first film and that Dalton is a college student.

The release date of “Insidious 5” has been pushed back to July 7, 2023, replacing “Madame Web.” After announcing BlumFest 2020, legendary producer Jason Blum said, “One of the primary reasons the desire and appetite from fans have persisted for ‘Insidious’ is because the people involved in the original film have stayed active and kept it new, interesting, and good.” He continued, “I am so appreciative of our franchise partners.”

Because of our extensive knowledge of the upcoming Insidious film, we can now get down to business. The most exciting thing for fans is that the Lambert family, who were the main characters in the first two Insidious movies, will be back for the fifth installment.

We know that Insidious 5 will take place ten years after the events of the second film, but we don’t yet know much about the plot. At the end of the episode, Josh (Wilson) and his son Dalton (Ty Simpkins) went to get hypnotized so they wouldn’t remember the terrifying things that happened to them in The Further.

Insidious Chapter 5 Expected Cast

Currently, Patrick Wilson (who plays Josh Lambert) and Ty Simpkins (who plays Josh’s son, Dalton Lambert), are the only members of the cast that have been confirmed for the fifth film. There’s no doubt that Leigh Whannell and Angus Sampson’s Specs and Tucker, plus Lin Shaye’s specter Elise Rainier, will all be back for the sequel.

By September of 2020, a full year before Insidious 5 was ever announced, Shaye had already shown interest in returning for the sequel. “I’m good with everything,” she told ComingSoon.net, “but if we return, I’ll be in The Further this time, so it’ll be different.” There was a lovely progression in both my character and the story as a whole, which I appreciated very much. This was an amazing experience that I would love to repeat.

There has been no sign of Rose Byrne (Renai Lambert) or Barbara Hershey (Lorraine, Josh’s mother) since Insidious: Chapter 2, and it’s not known if they will return for Insidious: Chapter 3. (They appeared in Insidious: The Last Key using repurposed footage from previous films.)

For his directorial debut, Patrick Wilson teams up with Scott Teems (Halloween Kills), who wrote the screenplay from a narrative by Halloween series co-creator Leigh Whannell.

Unfortunately, filming has not yet begun but depending on the film’s release date in 2022, we may see some first-look footage at Halloween 2021, possibly in conjunction with the release of Halloween Kills in theatres.

The fourquel has no chance of ever living up to the original, which wasn’t even a particularly high bar to clear. Insidious (2011) opened to mixed reviews but helped start the career of director James Wan. After directing the first two films in the (much better) Conjuring series, the director branched out into action with the massively successful Furious 7. The upcoming Aquaman picture from the DC Extended Universe will be his directorial debut. Even still, Wan owes a great deal to the Insidious series, given his prior directorial efforts (Saw and Death Sentence) weren’t particularly well-received by critics.

The critical reception of the first three Insidious films was strongly divided, with the series as a whole receiving a 54% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, horror movies are largely immune to the opinions of moviegoers and critics, thus the three of them made nearly $371 million at the box office combined. The low production costs of the first three films (less than $6 million on average for Blumhouse Productions) ensured that a fourth film would be made.
