House of the Dragon’ Episode 9 Ending Explained: What Happens To Rhaenys During The Drag Pit?

After Viserys (Paddy Considine) dies, “The Green Council,” Episode 9 of House of the Dragon, starts with lies and betrayal. Alicent (Olivia Cooke) tells her father Otto (Rhys Ifans) that Viserys (Tom Glynn-Carney) wanted Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) to be king with his last breath, but she got it wrong because she didn’t understand what Viserys said. Otto starts to close down the palace because he knows that even one person who heard Viserys’ last words could be questioned. He also doesn’t want Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) to find out about her father’s death. He gets rid of the Goldcloaks members who are still loyal to Daemon (Matt Smith). Criston (Fabien Frankel) kills Lord Beesbury (Bill Paterson), the only member of the small council who is still loyal to Rhaenyra. Larys (Matthew Needham) locks up the servants who know the truth about Viserys’ death, and Princess Rhaenys (Eve Best) is locked in her room until Aegon

The episode puts us right in the middle of the Greens’ plans to make Aegon the new king as soon as Viserys dies. It shows some of the worst sides of the family, who are all too eager to take advantage of Viserys’ death while his body rots. The episode ends with Aegon’s not-so-victorious coronation, where Criston crowns the prince and says, “Let the seven bear witness: Aegon Targaryen is the true heir to the Iron Throne.”

Of course, nothing goes smoothly in Westeros, and crowning the wrong heir is no exception. After raising the ancient Valyrian sword Blackfyre over his head and hugging the crowd of cheering commoners, the ground in the dragon pit explodes, and Meleys, the Red Queen, bursts forward from the Dragon Pit, where the coronation is held.

What Happens To Rhaenys In The Episode?

Rhaenys is stuck in her room while the other characters plot and try to become king. When Alicent comes to see her, she figures out right away that the king has died. Alicent tries to get Rhaenys to join the Greens, but fails. Rhaenys is then told that Meleys’ dragon would give Rhaenyra too much power, which could lead to war in the country. But when Ser Erryk, played by Elliott Tittensor, sneaks into her room, he promises to get her out of the city.

What Happens To Rhaenys In The Episode

When Lord Caswell (Paul Hickey), who was trying to leave King’s Landing to warn Rhaenyra about what was going on, is hung in the square to send a message to any Black supporters who are still in the keep, we see what happens when you oppose the Greens. Rhaenys probably would have died if she had stayed in the Red Keep for much longer. Erryk tells her to find a ship and get away from King’s Landing, but she won’t give up her dragon. When the City Watch rounds up the people and starts directing them to the Dragon Pits, where most people can watch the coronation, the two are separated.

What Happens In The Dragon Pits?

Rhaenys was led into the Dragon Pits and watched as a septon blessed Aegon and Criston Cole crowned him. She then went under the building to find Meleys. During the coronation, Otto says that Viserys told him on his deathbed that Aegon should be his heir. At first, the people seem confused, but when Aegon is crowned, they cheer for him.

The party doesn’t last long, though, because Meleys suddenly pops up from the ground below, killing everyone above and causing a panic. The little people try to get out the doors, but the City Watch is trying to shut them. In the chaos, Rhaenys can be seen wearing armour and standing on Meleys, staring down the Greens. With Meleys’ face just a few inches from Aegon’s head, she could have killed Aegon and his whole family. Instead, she roars in their faces, and Rhaenys runs out of the Dragon Pit, probably toward Rhaenyra and Daemon.

From what Rhaenys and Alicent said to each other, it’s clear that Alicent has power in court, but Rhaenys doesn’t see her as in charge. She thinks of Alicent as someone who supports the men around her, even though she might be a better fit for the throne. Rhaenys can’t be convinced to switch sides by pointing out that she was almost queen. In the end, it’s clear that the Queen Who Never Was has already made up her mind. With Meleys on their side, Rhaenyra will have a strong alliance that can take on the Greens.

The last episode of House of the Dragon’s first season will air on HBO and HBO Max next Sunday.
