North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum signed a six-week abortion ban into law on Monday, even in cases of rape or incest.
“This bill clarifies and refines existing state law and reaffirms North Dakota as a pro-life state,” Burgum, said in a statement.
The law, which is one of the most stringent in the country, goes into effect immediately.
Supporters argue that the law protects every human life, while opponents argue that it will have disastrous effects for women and girls.
The bill was proposed by Republican Sen. Janne Myrdal of Edinburg.
“North Dakota has always been pro-life and believed in valuing both mothers and children,” Myrdal told The Associated Press after Burgum signed the law. “We’re pleased and grateful that the governor supports that value.”
