George Santos Caught Lying Over Claim His Mom Died From 9/11 Attack

Representative-elect George Santos of New York is said to have said different things about when his mother died. At one point, he said she died after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, and at another, he said she died six years ago.

In November, Mr. Santos won a seat in New York’s 3rd district, which is in the Long Island area, where Republicans won several seats. But since then, he’s been in trouble for making up things on his resume. Wednesday night, several people on Twitter pointed out that Mr. Santos seemed to say different things about how his mother died.

On July 12, 2012, Mr. Santos wrote on Twitter that 9/11 “took the life of my mother.”

But on December 23, of that same year, he wrote on Twitter that it had been five years since he had lost his mother, whom he called his “best friend and mentor.”

Later, Republican lobbyist Liam Donovan tweeted a part of Mr. Santos’s campaign biography that says his mother was in the South Tower during the terrorist attacks.

The bio says, “She lived through the terrible events of that day, but she died a few years later.”

The tweets are just the most recent of what seems to be a long line of contradictory statements, exaggerations, and outright lies that Mr. Santos has made.

A story in the New York Times showed that Baruch College, where he said he graduated in 2010, didn’t have any record of that.

It also found that the Internal Revenue Service had no record of a charity he said he had started, and neither Goldman Sachs nor Citigroup had any record of him working there, even though he said he did.

The Jewish Daily Forward also said that his mother’s parents were born in Brazil, not in Eastern Europe, even though he said he was Jewish and that his parents had fled persecution because they were Jewish. He later said, “I’m Jewish-ish.”
