George Jones’ Early Life
George Glenn Jones was born in Saratoga, Texas, on September 12, 1931. His family was poor, and he was one of eight kids. His father was an alcoholic who sometimes got angry. Jones later wrote in his autobiography. I Lived to Tell It All, “When our father was sober, we were his mistresses, and when he was drunk, we were his slaves.” Jones and his family endured hard times, but they all loved music. They often sang hymns together and listened to records by the Carter Family. They also liked to listen to the radio and watch broadcasts of the Grand Ole Opry.
Jones’s father bought him his first guitar when he was nine. Since he was good at it right away, he was sent out on the road to perform and make money for the family.
At 16, he left home and moved to Jasper, Texas, where he worked as a singer at the local radio station KTXJ and grew to love Hank Williams’ music.
After a few years, Jones moved back to Beaumont and married Dorothy Bonvillion in 1950. Soon after, they had a daughter named Susan. However, their marriage didn’t last long, at least in part because Jones had inherited his father’s explosive temper and love of alcohol.

Songs: “What Am I Worth” And “White Lightning.”
Jones got divorced and then joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in the Korean War. He was never sent overseas, though. Instead, he was stationed in San Jose, California, where he played music in local bars.
Jones started doing what he liked after escaping the military in 1953. Producer Pappy Daily, a co-owner of Starday Records, quickly found him. Jones got a recording contract immediately, and Daily became his producer and manager. They worked together for a long time.
Jones married Shirley Ann Corley in 1954, and they had two sons, Jeffrey and Brian. But that year, he had less success with his music, as his first four singles did not do well.
Jones’s luck changed in 1955 when “Why Baby Why,” a fast-paced ballad about heartbreak, reached No. 4 on the country charts. After that, he released more singles like “What Am I Worth” (1956), “Just One More” (1956), and “Do Not Stop the Music” (1957), all of which reached the Top 10 on the country charts. Jones ended the decade with his first number-one album, “White Lightning,” which also did
The Crown Prince of Country Music
By the beginning of the 1960s, Jones’s songs about heartbreak had made him one of the best country music singers.
He did even better on the charts with songs like “Window Up Above,” which was No. 2 in 1960, and “Tender Years,” which was No. 1. (1961). In 1962, the balladeer’s signature song, “She Thinks I Still Care,” brought him back to the top of the charts.
The following year, he worked with Melba Montgomery on their first of many albums, What’s in Our Heart. It became No. 3 on the charts and was their most successful project.
Jones also had hits on her own. In 1964, “The Race Is On” was the No. 3 song, and in 1965, “Love Bug” was the No. 10 song.
Jones’s solo and his work with other artists were well-received in the second half of the 1960s, and this trend continued.
During this time, some of his most important releases were the singles “I Am a People” (1966) and “As Long as I Live” (1968), as well as the 1969 duet album I’ll Share My World with You, whose title song reached No. 2 on the charts.
George Jones’ Personal life
At the same time, Jones’s personal life was again in chaos. His second marriage was already falling apart because he kept using drugs, but when he met and fell in love with country singer Tammy Wynette, their fates were sealed. Jones and Shirley split up in 1968, and Jones married Wynette the next year.
It wasn’t just a romantic relationship; in 1969, they also started making music together after they got married. Jones broke up with Pappy Daily and began working with Billy Sherrill, one of Wynette’s producers. Sherrill gave Jones’ sound a polish.
Several of Jones and Wynette’s duets, like “The Ceremony” and “Take Me,” reached the Top Ten, which was a good sign for their partnership.
Both of them kept having success on their own, with Jones putting out several singles that reached the top of the charts. At this time, Wynette also gave birth to their daughter, Tamala Georgette. By all accounts, Jones and Wynette were the king and queen of the country.
