Rihanna’s fans were excited to hear her first new song in six years. In it, she pays tribute to the late actor Chadwick Boseman.

The 34-year-old Barbadian singer released “Lift Me Up” from the new Marvel movie Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which is the sequel to 2018’s record-breaking Black Panther.

Rihanna released the song on Friday at midnight, just a few hours after she and her 34-year-old boyfriend, A$AP Rocky, went to the Wakanda Forever premiere. “Lift Me Up” is Rihanna’s first new song since her 2016 album, Anti. It is a soaring ballad that shows how her voice has changed and grown.

Rihanna said that the song is a “tribute to the extraordinary life and legacy of Chadwick Boseman,” who played T’Challa and became the Black Panther in the original film and in a number of other Marvel movies. Boseman died in September 2020, at the age of 43, after a secret fight with colon cancer.

Rihanna also gave a sneak peek of a music video for the song. In it, she stares into the camera while standing on a beach, and scenes from Wakanda Forever play in the background.

In the scenes, T’Challa’s sister Shuri was sad, and Wakandan dancers were performing at what seemed to be his funeral. “Lift Me Up” might be played at this point in the movie, but some news stories say it will be played over the end credits.

Ryan Coogler, who directed the movie, wrote the song with Nigerian singer-songwriter Terms and producer Ludwig Goransson.

Coogler said that he chose Rihanna to record a song for the soundtrack because he was “looking for artists who would embody [the film’s] themes,” and “Rihanna was at the top of that list.”

He told Hollywood Reporter, “We wanted to do something different with the music for the movie. We wanted to use actual songs as part of the score throughout the movie.”

Rihanna’s fans liked the new song and were happy to see the businesswoman back in music. “Rihanna’s voice has gotten so much better as she has grown up. Okay, mom, NOW I need a new Rihanna song that doesn’t have a soundtrack. BAD GAL RIRI, “one fan wrote on Twitter.

Another person tweeted, “I didn’t realize how much I missed hearing Rihanna’s voice and her new music until I played “Lift Me Up.” Rihanna went to the world premiere of Wakanda Forever on Thursday in Los Angeles, where she kissed A$AP Rocky in front of a lot of people. They had their first child, a son they haven’t named yet, in May. They’ve been together for about two years.

Rihanna has had a big month. She also announced that she will be the half-time show at the Super Bowl in 2023.
