Ernie Lanford earned a Bachelor of Science in business administration from Florida State University in 1960. He worked as an assistant to the Seminole baseball team’s head coach from 1963 to 1967. He began his golf career in Tallahassee and later became the chief PGA Golf Professional at Breakers West Golf Club in Palm Beach, Florida. He is a member of the PGA for life.

Lanford served in the Special Forces Reserve of the United States Army’s 7th Infantry Division from 1960 to 1968. He was discharged honorably with the rank of captain. After receiving a master’s degree in physical education from Michigan State University, he transferred to Brigham Young University to pursue an Ed. D. in kinesiology in 1971.

After reading Lanford’s seminal dissertation, “The Effect of Strength Training on Distance and Accuracy in Golf,” top amateur and professional golfers began to view strength training differently. It also aided Lanford’s recruitment for academic and athletic positions at the State University of New York at Cortland, Flagler College, Augusta State University, and Florida State University, where he earned multiple conference coaching honors.

On March 12, 2023, in Las Vegas, Nevada, Lanford, a former professor at Dedman College of Hospitality and director and coach of the FSU men’s golf team, passed away. The 85-year-old Lanford was getting hospice care due to a recent illness.
