David Letterman Slams Tom Cruise for Missing the Academy Awards Jimmy Kimmel Agrees He ‘Should’ve Been There’: ‘Yeah, Of Course!’

David Letterman visited “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and asked the host, who recently received positive feedback for his role as Oscars host in 2023, a pressing question. Tom Cruise is something that might be a little sensitive, Letterman said. What happened to Tom Cruise?

Despite receiving six Academy Award nominations for “Top Gun: Maverick,” and Cruise being nominated for best picture as one of the film’s producers, Cruise did not attend the 2023 ceremony.

The cruise was said to be too busy filming the “Mission: Impossible” sequel in Italy to attend the Oscars, but he showed up in London two days later to attend Michael Caine’s 90th birthday party. In February, Cruise attended the Oscar Nominees Luncheon.

“We don’t know where Tom Cruise was,” Kimmel answered Letterman. “We heard production issues.”

“What does that mean?” Letterman asked. “That’s nonsense.”

“Exactly. It’s very non-specific,” Kimmel said. “But we have no idea what happened.”

Letterman then said Cruise “should’ve been” at the Oscars “celebrating his big jet pack Maverick show,” to which Kimmel replied, “Yeah. He appeared to have been present, but he was not. Perhaps he didn’t want to come because he felt he wasn’t going to win.”

“But, in your opinion, he should have been there, right?” Kimmel was then asked by Letterman.

“Yeah of course,” Kimmel answered. “He’s the prince of Hollywood.”

“More power to your success,” Letterman continued. “Even if Mr. Big Shot wasn’t there, the show would never have been more successful. “Well done, Jimmy.”

Because Cruise did not attend the Oscars, Kimmel and his writing team decided to include a light-hearted Scientology joke in his Oscars monologue.

“Tom Cruise with his shirt off in that beach football scene?” joked the host. Mr. L. Ron Hubba “Do you understand what I’m saying, Hubba?”

Cruise was not the only famous person who skipped the Oscars. “Avatar: The Way of Water” director James Cameron was also absent, prompting Kimmel to say during his monologue, “You know, Tom and James Cameron didn’t show up tonight. The two guys who insisted we go to the theatre didn’t show up.”

Molly McNearney, who co-produced the 2023 Oscars and is also Kimmel’s wife, told Variety the day after the ceremony that if Cruise had attended the show, no Scientology jokes would have been made.

“No. We had about a three-minute chunk of the monologue dedicated to Tom Cruise, honoring him and his role in reviving the movie industry,” she said.

“We were so disappointed when we learned a few days before the Oscars that he wouldn’t be there. Jimmy loves him and really wanted to celebrate him.”
