David Crosby, Member of The Byrds And Crosby, Dead At Age 81

David Crosby, a folk-rock pioneer and one of the original members of The Byrds and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, has died, his family said Thursday. He was 81.

“It is with great sadness after a long illness, that our beloved David (Croz) Crosby has passed away. He was lovingly surrounded by his wife and soulmate Jan and son Django,” the Crosby family said in a statement. “Even though he isn’t with us anymore, his good heart and humanity will continue to guide and inspire us. His legacy will live on through the legendary music he made.”

CNN tried to talk to Crosby’s people, but they didn’t have anything to say.

Crosby was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991 with the Byrds and again in 1997 with Stephen Stills and Graham Nash as Crosby, Stills & Nash.

Tom Petty Says “Tom counted David Crosby as a friend and a hero. He visited often at his house in the valley. He was funny, provocative and electric with talent”.

“Peace, love, and harmony to all who knew David and those he touched,”  the statement said. “We’ll miss him very much.”

But music called to him, and in 1963, he joined Roger McGuinn and Gene Clark to form the rock band The Byrds. In 1965, the band was up for a Grammy for the best new artist. The Byrds had a number of hits, including “Turn! Turn! Turn!,” which became popular again in the mid-1990s because of the movie “Forrest Gump.”

It was only their second live show together, but it helped them get noticed by many people. “Crosby, Stills & Nash,” the band’s first album, came out in 1969 and was an instant hit. It included the hits “Marrakesh Express” and “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes.”

After Neil Young joined the group in 1970, they were known as Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. They put out the album “Déjà Vu,” which had the hit song “Woodstock” on it. Crosby worked with some of the best musicians in the world, like Jerry Garcia, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead, Carole King, and Joni Mitchell, in addition to making his own albums.
