Chris Howard Career

In his four years at Michigan, from 1994 to 1997, he ran 418 times for 1876 yards and caught 60 passes for 429 yards. He had nine runs of 100 yards or more for Michigan, four of which came during the 1997 championship season. In college, he ran for 127 yards against the Minnesota Golden Gophers in 1996, his best performance. But against the UCLA Bruins, he once ran for 109 yards and four touchdowns. Howard also ran 86 yards, the fourth longest rush in school history.

Even though he only played in ten games as a junior, he had five 100-yard games that year. He ran for 725 yards in the ten games and scored ten touchdowns. But the team’s best rusher was a sophomore named Clarence Williams, who had 837 yards in 12 games.

Howard was the top rusher in the 1998 Rose Bowl, which helped the 1997 Team win the national title.

In 1997, he was the leading rusher for a 12–0 Michigan team that won the championship. That team didn’t have a 1,000-yard rusher or a 500-yard receiver. The team’s defense was led by Charles Woodson, who won the Heisman Trophy in 1997. Howard ran for 938 yards on 199 carries and caught passes for 276 yards on 37 receptions. He scored more points for his team than anyone else except for the placekicker, Kraig Baker. He ran for seven touchdowns and caught one touchdown. In the backfield, he was joined by freshman Anthony Thomas, who ran for 549 yards and five touchdowns.

One of the most critical games in Michigan’s 1997 National Championship season was when they played unbeaten, and No. 2 ranked Penn State Nittany Lions. In the win over the Nittany Lions, Howard ran for 120 yards and a touchdown, which made Coach Lloyd Carr say: “I think Chris Howard is a back who doesn’t get enough credit. Today, he proved that.”  Michigan dominated the game and led 34–0 after three quarters, thanks to Howard’s best collegiate performance in yards from scrimmage, with 120 yards rushing and 41 yards receiving.

In the Rose Bowl on January 1, 1998, the season ended with a 21–16 win over Washington State. Howard ran 19 times for 70 yards, which was the most of any player in the game.

He was also the most valuable player for the North in the Hula Bowl, a college football all-star game, in 1998. He ran 14 times for 116 yards and helped the North score the last point of their comeback in the second half. On a reverse play, he gave the ball to Joe Jurevicius. Jurevicius then threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Brian Griese. The North lost because the missed extra point opened the door for a field goal that won the game.

But I won’t say that our evaluations are done just yet.” Coughlin said the following about Howard’s mistakes in Denver: “It was a lack of care. We’ll have to start from scratch with him here.” Howard ran for 123 yards in his career on 41 carries and caught passes for 37 yards on five catches.
