Babyface was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on April 10, 1958. His parents were Marvin and Barbara Edmonds. His parents have six sons, and he is the fifth one. Barbara worked as a production operator in a drug factory.

When Edmonds was in eighth grade, his father died of lung cancer. At this time, he decided he wanted to make music his career. He was a shy kid who wrote songs about his feelings.
